How to Connect With Customers on Instagram

Like hundreds of millions of people around the world, I love to share photos and videos on Instagram, both through my posts and stories. As a business, you can share photos and videos through your posts and stories too, and it’s a good idea to share through both. Why? I’ll walk you through it. But first, let’s talk about the difference between your posts and your stories.

When you open Instagram, one way to share a photo or video is to make a post. People who follow your business may see your post in their personalised feed, where they can like and comment on them. People can always look at posts that appear in their feed, unless you delete a post, of course.

Instagram stories are a little different. To open Stories, go to the banner at the top of your feed. Tap one of the circles, and you’ll see a series of photos and videos from people and businesses you follow. You’ll notice they appear on screen for only a matter of seconds, then you’re automatically onto the next one. They’re like very short episodes.

One important thing to know about Stories: Unlike your feed, people can only see your stories for 24 hours after you post them, then they disappear. After that, only you can see your stories.

So, why is it smart to post to feed and stories? When you post to both, you have more opportunities to connect with people. Let’s say that your business coordinates a farmer’s market in Cape Town. Maybe on Stories, you post a behind the scenes video of vendors setting up their stalls. That could even be fun as a timelapse video. Then you might post a photo of the market’s colourful displays. Now, no matter where your followers spend time, on their feed or Stories, there’s a better chance they’ll see and interact with what you’ve shared.

More than half of people on Instagram share and view Instagram stories and posts every day. Both formats allow people and businesses to view, create and share photos and videos. But there are some key differences.

Instagram Stories

Photos and videos shared on Instagram Stories are full-screen and disappear within 24 hours unless saved or added to your profile. They can also be enhanced with playful creative tools, such as stickers, emojis and GIFs.

Instagram feed

Pictures you share in your Instagram feed will appear in your followers’ feeds, live on your profile (unless deleted) and can be edited with filters.

Your Instagram feed is an extension of your digital shopfront, where customers can discover your products or services and establish a connection with your business.

Instagram stories, on the other hand, allow people to express themselves creatively, experience moments outside their everyday lives and feel connected to a larger part of the community. Your business can use Instagram stories to show customers what’s happening right now: a behind-the-scenes video of a live event or real-time look at a product being made.
