ToggleGoogle Search May Now Use OG Title for Title Links
Google has introduced a new capability by adding a ninth source for generating title links in Google Search results.
Recent Update:
Google Search recently updated its documentation to clarify that it may now utilize the og:title metadata as a source for title links in search results. This addition expands the number of potential sources Google may draw from when determining the title link for a webpage to nine, giving webmasters and content creators additional considerations when optimizing their pages for search visibility.
List of Title Link Sources:
Google Search may now choose from the following sources to generate your title link:
- Content in
<title>elements: The title tag remains the primary and most traditional source for title links, directly influencing how your page is represented in search results. - Main visual title shown on the page: Google may extract the title that is visually prominent on your page, which is typically the main headline or banner text.
- Heading elements, such as
<h1>elements: Headings, especially<h1>tags, are key indicators of the page’s main topic and may be used for title links. - Content in
og:titlemeta tags: Newly added, this source pulls from the Open Graph protocol’sog:titletag, which is commonly used for social media sharing. - Other content that’s large and prominent through the use of style treatments: Text that is visually emphasized on the page through size, color, or other styling may also be considered.
- Other text contained in the page: Google may look at other textual content on the page if it deems it relevant for the title link.
- Anchor text on the page: The text used in hyperlinks on the page could be a potential source for generating title links.
- Text within links that point to the page: The anchor text of links from other pages pointing to the current page might be used as the title link.
- Website structured data: Google might use structured data embedded within the page, especially if it’s relevant to the content.
What’s New:
The inclusion of the og:title meta tag as a source is a noteworthy update. The Open Graph og:title tag is designed to control how your page title appears when the page is shared on social media platforms, making it an important element for both social sharing and now, potentially, for search results.
Understanding og:title:
The og:title tag is part of the Open Graph protocol, which was originally developed by Facebook to standardize the way information is shared across social networks. The og:title specifies the title of your content as it should appear when shared, making it a critical component for social media optimization. Now, with Google potentially using this tag for title links in search results, its importance extends beyond just social media.
What is a Title Link in Google Search:
The title link in Google Search is the clickable headline that appears in the search result snippet. It’s a crucial element because it’s often the first thing users see when your page appears in search results, influencing their decision to click through to your website. For example, in a search result snippet like this one:
“How to make crispy fried eggs”
The phrase “How to make crispy fried eggs” is the title link. It’s essential that your title link accurately represents the content of your page while also being engaging enough to entice users to click on it.
Why It Matters:
This update emphasizes the importance of the og:title tag not just for social media, but now also for search engine optimization (SEO). Webmasters and SEO professionals should ensure that their og:title tags are well-crafted, as they may now directly influence how their content appears in Google Search. This adds another layer to how you can control and optimize your content’s presentation in search results, allowing for more refined and targeted search marketing strategies.
By considering all nine potential sources, you can better optimize your pages to ensure that Google selects the most appropriate and appealing title link for your content, potentially increasing click-through rates (CTR) and improving your overall search performance.
